Welcome to
South Dakota Wing CISM!

Responding to tragedies puts those who respond at psychological risk. Responders are under extreme stress, and may witness things that can haunt the dreams. Critical incident stress is a normal reaction to abnormal circumstances. Psychological first aid (PFA) can help prevent these initial reactions from becoming long-term mental health problems. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is the school of PFA employed by CAP.

CISM is not psychotherapy any more than regular first aid is trauma surgery. It is, however, a valuable way of assisting those at risk, and identifying those for whom professional psychological services would be beneficial.
