SD Wing Scholarships For CAP Activities

There are several types of scholarships the SD Wing Provides. Below is a list of scholarships along with their requirements and the application procedures.

Cadet Activities Scholarships
Chair: Maj. Nicholas Gengler
The South Dakota Wing will establish a Cadet Activities Scholarship. This program is designed to assist cadets in the costs of local, Wing, and National Activities.

SELECTION CRITERIA

SD WILL APPOINT A 3 PERSON BOARD TO REVIEW AND SELECT CADET ACTIVITY SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

  • The board must have the Wing Director of Cadet Programs as a member.
  • Applications accepted anytime during the year. Application submissions pertaining to NCSA’s should be submitted before the start of the summer activities but after the cadet knows their are selected to go to an activity.
  • Can be used for local Wing Activities, Encampments, or NCSAs.
  • Scholarship could cover partial or all of activity costs. Depending upon funds available.
  • Cadets can apply even if they have received a scholarship in previous years.
  • Unspent funds that were awarded to a cadet, will be re-allocated accordingly.
  • Scholarship committee will review all applications and vote on whom should be awarded the scholarships.
  • Scholarship may come with a few prerequisites. (i.e. the cadet must successfully graduate a NCSA before costs will be reimbursed)
  • Cadets will submit a letter of intent on what activity the scholarship will be used for and why they want to go to that activity.
  • Cadets will submit a resume that includes:
    • Your CAP experience
    • Awards
    • Staff positions held at various events
    • Community involvement
  • Cadets will submit the letter of intent and resume to Maj. Nick Gengler at nick.gengler@sdcap.us

Flight Scholarships
Chair: Lt. Col. Buck Deweese
The South Dakota Wing will establish a Flight Scholarship Program. This program is designed to help cadets of the SD Wing continue their flight training.

SELECTION CRITERIA

SD WILL APPOINT A 3 PERSON BOARD TO REVIEW AND SELECT FLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

  • The board must have at least 1 mission pilot.
  • Each board member will review every application.
  • Each applicant will be interviewed by at least one board member either in person or on the phone.
  • Each board member will rank order the applicants and submit their recommendation to the ranking Board member who will then discuss the inputs with other members. The applicant with the lowest total rank score will not necessarily always be the winner. In case of a tie the scholarship will go to the highest ranking cadet.
  • The board should meet at least 2 times per year to review applications even if there are no funds available ( sometimes an identified need generates unexpected funds). April and September are suggested.
  • The cadet must have spent ALL of the awarded scholarship in six months and prior to applying for another scholarship. Unspent funds will be re-allocated to all eligible applicants.
  • Scholarships will be limited to $500.00.
  • Cadets who have already been awarded a scholarship will not be considered for a subsequent scholarship UNLESS there are no other applicants and scholarship money is still available.
  • Scholarships will NOT be spent on personal flight gear such as headsets, kneeboards, flight bags, insurance, etc. Aircraft rental, fuel and instructor fees, etc. will be submitted to Wing Finance on a CAPF108 with dated and identifiable receipts which clearly describe the expense. Personally incurred maintenance or overnight and/or cross-country expenses will not be reimbursed.
    Cadets will submit a one page essay which contains at minimum the following:

    • NAME
    • RANK
    • CAP ID NUMBER
    • AGE
    • YEARS IN CAP
    • ACHIEVEMENTS/RECOGNITIONS
    • EMAIL ADDRESS
    • TELEPHONE NUMBER
    • DATE OF LAST SCHOLARSHIP (IF ANY)
    • WHAT YOUR FUTURE PLANS AND GOALS ARE IN AVIATION AND CAP

    CAP Officer Professional Development Scholarship Program
    Chair: Col. Mary Donley
    The South Dakota Wing will establish a Wing Professional Development Scholarship Program. This program is designed to help Officers of the SD wing better able to attend training events around the state, region and nation that will enhance their mission and leadership skills.

    SELECTION CRITERIA

    SD WILL APPOINT A 3 PERSON BOARD TO REVIEW AND SELECT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT APPLICATIONS

    • The board must have the wing Professional Development Officer as a member.
    • The board will have 2 Officers from wing staff assist with the selection of scholarship recipients.
    • Each applicant will be interviewed by at least 2 of the board members either in person or by phone.
    • Each board member will rank order the applicants and submit their recommendations to the ranking board member who will then discuss input with the other board members. In case of a tie the scholarship will go to the highest ranking applicant that is a finalist.
    • The board will meet a minimum of 2 times per calendar year to review applications for scholarships to attend state, regional or national training that will enhance their advancement in the CAP Senior Program.
    • Scholarship amount awarded will be determined by the board at the time of selection. Maximum amount awarded per applicant is $500. The applicant chosen must use the funds in that calendar year or return the funds to SD Wing.
    • Scholarship funds can be used on registration for events, transportation to and from an event and billeting and food during an event. When the event or training is completed the recipient will turn in receipts on applicable wing finance forms for reimbursement.
    • All applicants must submit a CAPF 17 and a one page attachment with the following:
      • Name
      • Rank
      • CAP ID number
      • Years in CAP
      • Level and Awards in Senior Program
      • Email address
      • Telephone number
      • A short summary of the event/training you wish to attend and how this training/event will benefit you personally and enhance your participation in Civil Air Patrol and South Dakota Wing.
